Terms of use

These terms govern use of the EcoRando service, available at ecorando.subalpine.it. Using the service means accepting them.

EcoRando does not lead anyone to safety. Reports are left by hikers and are not routes: some are off-trail, on steep ground, near a cliff edge or exposed to rockfall. A report may also be inaccurate, out of date, or made in bad faith: nothing guarantees there is anything at all at the place shown. Never go after litter in a place you would not otherwise go, and never pick up anything that may be sharp, contaminated or hazardous (needles, drums, batteries). You remain the sole judge of what you do in the field, and solely responsible for your own safety.

1. Purpose

EcoRando lets you report litter abandoned in nature, record what has been collected — fully, partly or not at all — and consult a map of what remains.

The service is free. It is provided as is, with no guarantee as to the accuracy of reports, which are submitted by its users.

2. Account

Browsing the map requires no account. An account is needed to submit a report or a pickup.

Sign-in uses a one-time code sent by email. There is no password. You are responsible for access to your mailbox.

Accounts are personal. One person must not hold several: that is what would allow circumventing the rule that you are not paid for your own report.

3. Safety in the field

A report is not a route, and its presence on the map does not mean the place is accessible, safe, or that collection is possible there.

No report obliges you to travel anywhere. Reports are submitted by users: some are inaccurate, others out of date, and it cannot be ruled out that a malicious account submits one to draw somebody into a difficult place. Do not alter your route for a report, and turn back without hesitation on site.

Submitting a report that is non-existent, exaggerated or located in a dangerous place is strictly forbidden, in particular where the intent is to draw a person there. Such behaviour leads to immediate closure of the account, without notice, and may be reported to the competent authorities.

Any report that looks false, dangerous or personally identifying can be raised with moderation from its page, and is handled by a person.

Never pick up sharp, contaminated or potentially hazardous items: needles, chemical drums, batteries, ammunition, medical waste. Mark them “out of reach” and leave them in place.

Respect the rules of protected areas (national parks, reserves), private property, and wildlife. No feature of the service authorises disregarding them.

4. What you submit

You undertake to submit only sincere reports, corresponding to litter actually observed, at the indicated place.

Field notes are there to help find a place. They must not identify anyone, directly or indirectly — no names, no vehicle plates, no description allowing a person to be identified. The service maps places; it does not organise denunciation.

You keep your rights over what you submit, and grant the publisher the right to publish it on the service and in aggregated statistics, including after your account is deleted, in anonymised form.

  • Invented reports, or duplicates of the same pile of litter
  • Reports intended to draw a person into a dangerous place
  • Content naming people, or that is abusive, defamatory or discriminatory
  • Fabricated locations, or locations recorded somewhere other than on site
  • Automated use of the service (scripts, bulk submissions)

5. Points, levels and cheating

Points are neither a currency, nor a credit, nor an acquired right. They cannot be exchanged for anything, cannot be transferred, and give no entitlement to any material consideration. They may be recalculated or withdrawn.

The scale is public and deliberately flat: a pickup is worth a fixed amount, independent of quantity. Picking up your own report earns nothing, unless a third party has confirmed it and time has passed.

It is expressly forbidden to abandon or move litter in order to obtain points or raise a counter. Such behaviour runs against the very purpose of the service and leads to withdrawal of points and closure of the account.

The publisher may suspend the award of points pending a review, where an account’s behaviour shows several signs of misuse. That review is carried out by a person, never by an automated decision alone.

6. Moderation

The publisher may remove from the map any report that is manifestly false, dangerous or contrary to these terms, and may suspend an account.

Some accounts gain, through use, the ability to confirm or close reports. That ability is a responsibility, revocable at any time.

7. Availability and liability

The service may be interrupted for maintenance or technical reasons, without notice. The publisher guarantees neither continuous availability nor the completeness or accuracy of the data shown.

The publisher cannot be held liable for the use made of the service’s information in the field, nor for damage resulting from travel, collection or handling of waste.

8. Deleting your account

You can delete your account at any time from your personal area.

Your reports and pickups stay on the map, detached from your identity. Deleting them would reopen places that were genuinely cleaned and would distort the map for everyone: the field record remains, the link to you does not.

9. Changes to these terms

These terms may change. The effective date appears at the foot of the page; continued use after that date constitutes acceptance of the current version.

These terms are governed by French law.
